Merrithew NX3 MAX Pilates Reformer: What’s New?

  Table of contents

The Pilates Reformer is already a mature piece of equipment. Springs, a moving carriage, footbar, shoulder rests, ropes and pulleys have defined its basic structure for decades. New models may change the materials, dimensions or accessories, but the fundamental way a Reformer works remains remarkably consistent.

That makes the Merrithew NX3 MAX™ Reformer interesting for a different reason. Its most important changes are not about adding more Pilates exercises. They are about improving the way a professional Reformer is adjusted, adapted and controlled throughout a session.

The maple frame may be the first thing people notice, but it is not the most important part of the NX3 MAX. Underneath it are changes such as the EasyShift Gearbar, FastLock Shoulder Rests, Footbar Lock and adjustable Guide Rollers—all focused on familiar parts of the Reformer that instructors interact with repeatedly.

In other words, the NX3 MAX does not reinvent what a Pilates Reformer can do. It rethinks how a Reformer is used.

    1. Faster Pilates Reformer Adjustments Start With the EasyShift Gearbar

The clearest example is the EasyShift Gearbar.

On a traditional gearbar system, changing its position is more involved than it may appear. Springs need to be disconnected, the carriage stopper repositioned, the gearbar moved, and the springs connected again.

None of those steps is part of the exercise. They are simply necessary to prepare the Reformer for the next setup.

The NX3 MAX changes that process. With at least one spring still attached, the EasyShift Gearbar can be lifted and moved directly to another position. The carriage stoppers are integrated into the gearbar assembly, so what used to involve several separate actions becomes a much shorter sequence.

Merrithew says adjusting the EasyShift Gearbar can be up to 12 times faster than adjusting a traditional gearbar.

The number sounds dramatic, but speed itself is not really the point.

In a professional Pilates studio, a Reformer rarely remains in one configuration for an entire session. Instructors move between exercises, change spring settings and adapt machines for different clients. Every equipment adjustment creates a short interruption between one movement and the next.

Saving a few seconds once may not matter much. Saving those seconds repeatedly throughout a class does.

That is why EasyShift is probably the most revealing update on the NX3 MAX. It shows Merrithew focusing not only on the exercise itself, but also on the time between exercises.

The Retractable Rope System fits naturally into the same idea. Rope length can be released, adjusted and secured through the integrated cam levers and self-locking cleats, while the rope mechanism is managed beneath the carriage.

The result is a Pilates Reformer that asks for less attention when the machine needs to be reconfigured—and lets more attention stay on the session.

    2. A Professional Pilates Reformer Needs to Adapt to the User

Making adjustments faster only matters because a professional Reformer needs to change constantly.

Different bodies, exercises and movement positions may require changes to the shoulder rests, footbar, pulley height or rope length. This is where the NX3 MAX moves from simple adjustability toward better adaptability.

The FastLock™ Shoulder Rests are a good example. On the NX3 MAX, the shoulder-rest system incorporates a locking mechanism that allows each shoulder rest to be secured or released by rotating the FastLock control. When an exercise requires the shoulder rests to be removed, the process becomes a clear unlock-remove-reinstall-lock sequence.

The important point is not simply that the shoulder rests are removable. It is that the interaction with them has been reconsidered.

The same thinking appears in the footbar.

The NX3 MAX offers four footbar positions, but the more interesting detail is the dedicated Footbar Lock. Once the desired position has been selected, the locking mechanism engages a metal tab that prevents the footbar from lifting.

Adjustment and locking therefore become two distinct actions: first choose the position, then secure it.

At the other end of the machine, the Pulley Posts offer four settings, and Merrithew specifically notes that pulley height can be adjusted according to the client or the exercise.

Taken together, these features reveal a more useful way to judge professional Pilates equipment.

It is not enough for a Reformer to have adjustable components. Almost every professional Reformer does.

    The more important question is:

How easily can the machine move from one useful setup to the next?

That becomes especially relevant in group classes or busy studios, where several people with different proportions may use the same equipment throughout the day.

A professional Pilates Reformer is not really a fixed machine. It is a training platform that is continually being reconfigured around the person using it.

The easier that process becomes, the less the equipment gets in the way.

    3. The NX3 MAX Carriage Upgrade Is About Precision, Not Just Smoothness

The first two areas of improvement happen before or between exercises. But the NX3 MAX also changes what happens once the carriage begins moving.

The carriage platform measures 26 × 40 inches (66 × 101.6 cm), giving the body a substantial working surface within an overall Reformer width of approximately 29 inches (74 cm).

But the more interesting engineering is underneath it.

The NX3 MAX carriage system distinguishes between Main Rollers, Guide Rollers and an adjustable Guide Roller bracket.

That matters because a good Reformer carriage should not simply roll as freely as possible.

Merrithew's adjustment instructions show the balance the system is trying to achieve. If the Guide Rollers are positioned too far inward, they can contribute to resistance, squeaking or jamming. If they allow too much clearance, the carriage can develop excessive side-to-side movement. The rollers can therefore be fine-tuned until the carriage moves freely while lateral play remains minimal.

This makes “smooth carriage” a more complicated idea than it first appears.

A professional Pilates Reformer needs both freedom of movement and control of movement. Too much friction is undesirable, but so is a carriage that feels loose laterally.

The adjustable Guide Rollers allow that relationship to be tuned rather than treated as completely fixed.

And this is where the NX3 MAX design becomes more coherent.

EasyShift makes human adjustment more precise and efficient. The Guide Roller system applies a similar level of attention to the movement of the machine itself.

One improves how the Reformer is configured. The other improves how the Reformer behaves once it is in motion.

    4. NX3 MAX Plus Expands the Reformer Into a Complete Pilates Training

The NX3 MAX Plus™ Reformer takes the same platform and expands its training range with the Vertical Frame and Mat Converter.

The Vertical Frame supports additional spring-based work through Push-Thru Springs, Roll-Down Springs, Arm Springs and Leg Springs, while the MAX Plus package also incorporates accessories such as the Platform Extender and Curved Reformer Box.

The important point is not the length of the accessory list.

It is what happens to the utility of the equipment.

The standard NX3 MAX focuses heavily on making the Reformer easier to configure and control. The MAX Plus extends that idea by allowing the same core platform to support a wider range of training formats.

For a Pilates studio, that introduces another type of efficiency.

The previous improvements are about time efficiency: moving more easily between setups.

MAX Plus adds space efficiency: increasing the amount of training that can be supported by one equipment footprint.

That distinction matters in professional studios, where floor space is limited and every piece of large equipment has to justify the space it occupies.

    5. Is the Merrithew NX3 MAX a Meaningful Pilates Reformer Upgrade?

The NX3 MAX is not a revolutionary Reformer—and it does not need to be.

Its springs still provide resistance. Its carriage still travels along rails. The footbar, shoulder rests, ropes and pulleys still perform the roles Pilates instructors already understand.

What has changed is the way many of those familiar parts are handled.

The EasyShift Gearbar reduces the steps involved in one of the most repetitive Reformer adjustments. FastLock Shoulder Rests and the Footbar Lock make component changes more deliberate and clearly secured. Adjustable pulley positions and retractable ropes help the machine adapt to different users and exercises. The wider carriage and adjustable Guide Rollers take the same attention to detail into the movement system itself.

These are not changes designed to make the feature list longer. They are attempts to make an already mature machine easier to adjust, easier to adapt and more precise to use.

That may be the most interesting direction for the next generation of professional Pilates Reformers. When the fundamental exercise system already works, meaningful innovation does not necessarily come from adding more. Sometimes it comes from taking familiar parts and asking whether they can simply work better.

The NX3 MAX makes a convincing case that they can.

The only problem is the price—the NX3 MAX is simply too expensive.

NX3 MAX Reformer Bundle: Approximately €5,800. European dealer ReformX currently lists it at €5,799.88. NX3 MAX Plus Reformer Bundle: Approximately €9,100, currently listed at the same dealer at €9,082.90 (including VAT). Prices vary significantly between countries. For example, the Hungarian dealer currently lists the NX3 MAX at 2,176,000 HUF (promotional price, original price 2,339,050 HUF).
